As a painting subject, gray winter trees don't usually make the Top Ten list for most painters. In this painting the real subject is the light, which sets the stage for a particular mood I have during midwinter thaws. Here the light beckons the viewer into the distance, downriver.
The site was located almost a mile from the car. Walking out here loaded with painting gear over thin, cracking and slippery ice was a challenge. The river had earlier flooded it's banks, then frozen over. When the water retreated, it left wide sheets of ice suspended above the bare ground underneath.
